Crylan Species Information!

This site is a work in progress, so there may be incomplete or empty sections!

What are Crylans?

Crylans are an original species co-created by @vampycat237 (Alex) and @wybiebutkgayer (Wybie). Alex is responsible for the species design, while both Alex and Wybie have been working on the lore together for years!Their features somewhat resemble a combination of avian, dragon, lizard, horse, and bat, giving them an overall semi-familiar yet also somewhat alien appearance.

Crylans also come with their own lore - but participation in the lore is entirely optional! We love our critters and the stories we tell about them, but we think what's most important is that everyone has fun!

Species Rules

Crylans can be used in any way you like with only a few important exceptions:Crylans are NEVER to be used alongside or to spread hate speech, discrimination, cultural appropriation, or harmful caricatures. This includes Crylan designs containing these things.Explicit permission from both creators of the species is required to use crylans for commercial purposes (anything that earns you money). Alex's direct messages are always open and it can get ahold of Wybie if zer dms are not open.If you do not have a Twitter, more ways to contact Alex can be found on its carrd.

Common Traits

While there are common traits in crylan designs, this is only a result of these traits literally being commonly used, not by intentional design! All rarities of traits are 100% free to use, and both creators encourage creativity and thinking outside the box!
Fun fact - "common" traits for crylans actually emerged as a result of character creation restrictions in a game one of the creators modded the species into!

The most common traits a crylan can have boil down to:

  • three feather colors

  • grayish scales on their talons

  • striped or spotted pattern (stripes being more common for AFAB crylans and spots more commmon on AMAB crylans)

  • skin is pink, a neutral color (e.g. brown, grey-ish, black, etc), or matches a feather color/isn't visible

  • one iris color

  • white or off-white sclerae

A very "traditional" crylan; the design has three feather colors and a striped pattern. This one is rather monochromatic.

Design by Alex, belongs to Furme on Toyhouse!
A classic example of a crylan with common traits, this character has 3 feather colors and striped markings. The dark gray on the talons is actually a bit uncommon though!

Uncommon Traits

If you want your crylan to pop in a crowd a little better, here are some uncommon traits:

  • markings that aren't strictly spots or stripes (including a lack of markings*)

  • heterochromia (more than one color in the iris)

  • long/fluffy body feathers**

  • scales any color other than grayish or blackish

  • skin color other than pink/neutrals/feather color

  • yellow, beige, or any pastel colored sclerae

  • reddish pupils (albino)

Ralurai (he/they) (designed by and belongs to Alex) has multiple uncommon traits: their markings don't conform to the typical patterns, his scales are a pale salmon color, and though his eyes are closed in this image, he also has heterochromia.

*Markings typically develop as crylans age, so a lack of markings is common for young crylans. However, adult crylans without markings are uncommon.
**Long and/or fluffy feathers are relatively common among crylans living in cold climates.

Unusual Traits

While no design features are off-limits (aside from anything mentioned in the Species Rules), lore-involved characters may want some sort of backstory for these particularly outside-the-box design aspects!(This is all optional and just for fun - if backstory explanations aren't your thing, don't worry about it!)

Unusual traits include:

  • Blood any color other than red

  • Scleras (whites of the eye) that are not a light color

  • Pupils that are not black

  • Any pupil shape other than slit or round

  • Glow (markings, eyes, etc)**

  • Additional limbs, tail(s), ears, eyes, etc

A maroon and red crylan with glowing red markings and an exposed skull on her face.

Kathios (she/her) (designed by and belongs to Alex) has an exposed skull on her face (unusual), which works in canon because of her backstory involving magic and necromancy.
She also has glowing markings because she is a magic user.

This public VRChat avatar (made by Alex and based on Kathios's model) has an exposed skull on its face (unusual), light blue skin on its ears (uncommon), and glowing markings (unusual), but is not part of the species canon and so does not need any explanation. It just looks cool!

Most of these traits would either be the result of body modification, genetic modification, or simply an unusual mutation, but these are not your only options for explanation, and are also intentionally vague for you to expand upon if you desire to!Though, it is also worth mentioning that crylan doesn't have to fit into the species canon if you don't want it to! Backstory explanations are not required in this case. However, there is one case not listed here where even outside of crylik canon, there should be explanation: if your crylan possesses a trait that conflicts with their established anatomy. Examples include: hair, fur, or scales on their body; paws or other appendages instead of talons; major modifications to the tail; or any other major change to anatomy.
These are cases of the truly unnatural and are pretty much only a result of hybridization with another species.

*'Unusual traits' that are just an aesthetic choice and not "canon" to the character's lore don't ever need any explanation (for instance, coloring blood pink or drawing shapes in the iris instead of a pupil)!
**Glowing features are actually generally considered "natural," as they almost exclusively develop in magic-using crylans as they grow their skills, especially if they are particularly powerful. (I'm sure there might be other reasons a crylan could light up like a glow stick though...)
***Pretty much the only explanation for major anatomy changes would be hybridization with another species. This is the only one of these that does need some sort of explanation even outside of canon.

Terms, Names, and Language

This section is under construction - and will probably be moved to the Toyhouse world soon!

General Terminology

A quick guide to some terms used in this site and by the creators in general so that it hopefully doesn't seem like we're speaking gibberish.

  • crylan/krilan (plural crylans/krilen) - Informal species name of crylans. Left is the italicisation of their name that has become more familiar, including making it plural along the same lines as English words. Right is the more accurate italicisation of their name and the plural form accurate to the conlang the word originates from.

  • kri - "person" or "people", in the context of crylans. Humans don't call each other "human" casually, and crylans don't either.

  • Kriladan - The home planet of the Krilik Race.

Typical Names for Crylans

While crylans can be named anything, what is most typical is three syllable names following this structure: consonant and/or vowel + consonant + vowel and consonant. Most of these pieces don't have particular meanings, but some combos can produce one or more words or parts of words. For instance, the name Raujal has parts of the word for purple ("rauin") and the word for gemstone ("yejal").If you'd like to use that first naming convention, but are having some trouble wrapping your head around it, don't worry! We have a crylik name generator on Scratch that might help you out!Another naming convention is to simply use the word for an object or phenomena, like Karak (leaf) and Nomo (mountain). It's less common than the previously described system, but not exactly uncommon either.Rarely, crylans who are living off-world (in space, on another planet, etc, which is already rare itself) and mingling with other species who speak different languages sometimes choose to translate the meaning of their name, if there is one, or otherwise choose to go by a different name - however it is far more common for kri to keep their name. The most common situation that causes a crylan to go by a name not following these conventions is having little cultural contact with their home world, Cryladan, from hatching. This generally only occurs in hatchlings born off-world surrounded by other species, or in hatchlings artificially created by aliens.

Ruen, the Language of Crylans

under construction, sorry!
when done should include: a guide to proper italicization of Ruenik words, maybe a handful of important words, and hopefully a guide to the script (which includes writing what i call "faux Ruen", where you use Ruen's script to write words that are actually just in an Earth language, but it looks like it's in Ruen at a glance)

Lore

This section is under construction! Some buttons will just put you back here, others will throw you back to the home page unfortunately. Sorry about that :( it will be fixed!
This is the lore landing page! There will be quite a bit of content in this whole section by the time it is done, so it seemed like a better idea to make this into a place you can select what you want to learn more about instead of having to scroll through lots of text!
